Something to think about.

So last night was the last quiz and a great night was had by all. Especially The Bookworms - they won! It was actually a draw but Mel clinched it on the tie-break so there was a very happy group of my friends that went home last night.

Now I love to talk. I like meeting new people, I love the banter or as my friend Jenny would say 'the craic' and last night I had a yap in between rounds of the quiz with a couple sat next to me. ....Rich and Jan.  I'm not sure how but the conversation moved on to how we very rarely write anything these days as everything is done by keyboard or our phones and that when I was a lass ( cue Hovis advert music) we were taught firstly how to write basic letters, then joined up writing and then the neatness of our work would be worked on.

Both my girls are very clever ( like their mummy ) but neither has very good handwriting. H has a indecipherable scrawl and M is only slightly better. Most of their work is done on a computer and I have actually just been talking to a friend, or texting a friend and we both agreed that the need to hunt for a pen is always there as we now never really need them.

I love writing - my blog, my poems, and yet I don't - I type what I 'write' now and it is to the point that if I was to sit down and write 2 pages of A4 then I would end up with cramp. I know I had to fill in some forms a while ago and had to literally think before every word written.

Spelling! That's another thing. I pride myself on being a fairly literate lady and have never struggled with spelling or grammar. Can't spell for toffee? Don't worry - there's always auto correct.

Newspapers! Now in my youth we used to get 2 newspapers every day. My Dad always had the Daily Mirror and my Mum ( you just know what I am going to say here ) always had the Daily Mail. It's no wonder their marriage failed really. On a Sunday we had The News of the World and The Sunday Post and we always used to get the weekly newspaper too.

We never ever buy a newspaper now. There is 24 hour news on the telly, the internet tells you everything you need to know, I have a kindle and our next book group choice is only available , shock horror, in actual book form. We are all products of a modern age whether we like it or not.

And going back to school and college used to involve the buying of the stationery - you know, new pens, new books, pencils, rubber etc and still to this day I get a bit of a geek jizz looking at rows of shiny new things in packets and different colours and different sized notebooks. Maybe that's just me, but I would be gutted if I was at school now and only had to buy a couple of bits and a memory stick.

I would like to point out that I am 45 and not 90 so please forgive this little rant. I am being nostalgic. I like being nostalgic.

And it's our second run today! We are going to run around one of my horse fields. We need to climb a gate to get in there. I could just take the key to open the padlock on it, but where's the fun in that? We are fancying ourselves a bit as Charlie's Angels. I want to be Farrah on account of her big flicks and I think Leanne if she dyed her hair black would be a fantastic Kate Jackson. I did suggest this to her yesterday and she thought she was more of a 'Bos'.

Anyone under the age of 40 is not going to know what the hell I am waffling about.

I need to go and drink my black coffee and stretch.

We did it!

So Leanne and I went running................and I enjoyed it.

The views on Porthmeor at around 9.30 this morning were -

This to the left -

And this to the right -

And this was myself and Leanne before we set off. Notice how perky we look!

The beach was as gorgeous as ever. There was us and about 5 other people and a couple of lifeguards going about their business. There was another 'runner' and I said hello to him. The sun was out and the sky was blue. It was also really warm.

A perfect September day.

Nobody pointed at or  laughed at us, we may have misjudged the tide as we had to climb over a rock to get onto the main bit and I did get lapped by a little wave on the way back, but only on my feet.

I came home and ate a yogurt and a banana and have arranged to go again on Wednesday. We aren't doing the beach though, we are going to run around whichever one of the 2 horse fields doesn't have the horses in it. For obvious reasons.

I managed to get rid one of the many chocolate and orange brownies that M lovingly baked yesterday by giving it to Leanne. She tried to resist it but she went home with it. She ran further and faster than me so she deserves it.

My great friend Debbie has gone camping today for a week and I am going to miss her. She is going on a self discovery holiday of solitude and camping on the Isles Of Scilly. I am not a camper. I need electric and slugs scare me so there's no way I could sleep next to where they sleep.

And tomorrow is the final quiz...............and I haven't written one single question. That's tonight's job.

And then it's officially no longer summer , but autumn, my favourite season, and back to catching up with all the friends that I haven't seen so much over the summer.

All in all though, despite the incredibly wobbly start to the year and a very low point in my life, I am determined that the latter part will be good.

Of course, now that I am a runner I have all these positive hormones flowing around my body.........but fingers crossed I am right.

Run for the hills. Or maybe just on the beach the first time............

So Leanne and I are going 'running' tomorrow.

I am meeting her at 9 am. I have got the gear. I have to wear 2 bras. I am going to take a before photo and post it tomorrow. Depending on what we look like on the after photo, then I may post that too. I don't think that internet users in Chad will be able to resist us and will soon be avid blog readers.

I am not worried as according to my fancy iPhone it is going to pour with rain and so the beach will be quiet and dogs aren't allowed on them yet so we wont be chased by any savage hounds.

It would make a fantastic photo if we were though.............

Despite being the wrong build for running ( big boobs ) I have harboured a bit of a secret desire to do it for a while. I went once a couple of years ago with my friend Mandy but she can only go at night and at night I want to basically write my blog and relax.

A couple of friends of mine have really inspired me in all this. Actually, it's 3 friends - one of them will read this on Twitter and I reckon the other 2 will guess who they are. One of them goes to the local running club at Hayle and as soon as the last quiz at the campsite is over then I shall be going to. They claim to have fun and there is a 'special' group for beginners which I have no doubt that even after my marathon session with Leanne tomorrow, I may remain in for quite a long time.

I am a bit nervous. I don't want to make a fool of myself. I hope my bras can take the pressure. I hope I don't fall over. I hope Leanne turns up and I really hope we don't get pointed at or laughed at.

Is that too much to ask?

Will I be able to walk on Tuesday?

I never seem to see a happy runner.

Will I be one?

Back to not school , quizzes and book group.

So what a busy week I have had.

M started sixth form college and I think they are all struggling to get their heads round the fact that they are no longer at school. I gave her and 3 boys a lift in on their first day and they were excited and nervous and not at all sure what to expect. I didn't know what to expect when she came home and my heart sank to be faced with an angry little face who proclaimed she hated it. They didn't have her bus pass, they had got her timetable wrong, she had to go in yesterday but had no lessons and so it was all a bit tense here on Tuesday evening. Thankfully today has gone better - she had 3 lessons, she wandered into town, one of the baker's does 10% off a pasty if you're a student and she had a ride home on the open topped bus. I am crossing my fingers that she does settle in at Penzance as 2 years is a long time and she will never survive the bus journey to Truro without being travel sick.

The quiz this week was so much quieter and I have to say so much better without kids running around screaming. It was a more genteel type of clientele and The Bookworms won! Nobody challenged any of my questions and my favourite one was this -

''which new word in the Oxford English Dictionary's definition is ''to dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner using thrusting hip movements and a low squatting dance''?

I think next week is the last quiz for this year, it was dark outside and all the campers will be going home soon. I have really enjoyed doing these Tuesday night quizzes this year and have met some lovely lovely people. I have also met quite a few arseholes and if I do it again next year ( which I will ) then I will remember them. A quiz mistress never forgets a heckler.

And we also had book group last night.

Now a very important part of any proper book group is definitely the refreshments. One of our members suggested a Mexican themed buffet and I have to say it was delicious! Chilli, nachos, tortillas, salsa, ................profiteroles..............everything that you would eat in Mexico.

Our next book we are reading is 'Rough Music' by Patrick Gale.

This book is set in Cornwall so we are going to have a Cornish themed buffet. This means -

Pasties

Cream Teas

Saffron Cake

Raw Fry

Maleos

Star Gazey Pie

I always make nachos - Leanne likes them and  as she wasn't there last night there were tons left. I am trying to think of a Cornish version of  nachos but can't. I think I may have rashly promised ( after what was possibly the biggest vodka in the whole wide world )  that I would make the maleos. These are pickled fish done in a special spice that you can buy down Leddra's the Chemist.

I feel it would be wrong for me to make them as I am a Northumbrian and I think the only proper Cornish person there is Belinda so I am hoping she is feeling creative!

So all in all, that's my first week of September.

I love this month. The weather has been lush but I have lit the fire tonight as I am still in my flip flops and my toes are cold. I could put socks on but the roaring flames are so much more fun.

Hello Autumn.

Oh , and if you didn't know - the answer is TWERKING!
